Permanent Filler – Artefill

In early 2007 the FDA approved Artefill for use as a permanent facial filler. I have been very impressed with the ease of injection (for me and the patient) and the immediate results. I am following my patients closely to confirm the expected long lasting results. Artefill contains teeny tiny micro spheres of polymethylmethacrylante (PMMA). These micro spheres provide scaffolding for the patient’s own collagen. PMMA has been used for decades in other types of surgery and has a good record of safety.

Artefill treatment usually requires several visits. The first visit includes an examination, a skin test (must be done at least 4 weeks before treatment) and photos. The first injection is done with the intention to under correct a bit. This product does not resorb so it’s important to be conservative. I have patients return in another month or two for “topping off”.

For patients who have never had treatment with a filler, I will sometimes recommend a resorbable filler, such as Restylane, first just to make sure the patient likes the look of the filler.

Fillers provide a nice improvement with a natural, un-operated look with minimal down time. They are not a replacement for surgical rejuvenation but can enhance surgical results and allow patients to delay surgery for a few years or provide an alternative to patients who are not good candidates for surgery.
