Day of surgery

This is your big day! You will arrive about an hour before your surgery start time. I will see you, answer any questions you may have and do any necessary marking of the surgical site.

Once in the operating room, the nursing staff and anesthesia staff will attend to getting you comfortable on the operating table, placing monitors and an intravenous line and administering medications. If you don’t see my masked face hovering around, don’t worry, I’m just outside the door scrubbing my hands.

If you have had a general anesthetic (completely asleep) you will have very little appreciation for the passage to time. You may wake up wondering when we’re going to get the show on the road. We’ll let you know we’re already done. You will be observed by the nursing staff for 1 to several hours depending on your procedure and the depth of your anesthetic. If you have had any sedation, you must go home with a responsible adult.

Either my nurse or I will give you a call the evening after your surgery. Please answer the phone! It’s just us making sure you’re okay.

Some patients stay overnight at the surgery center or the hospital. The night nurse will call me at home should any problems arise. I will see you at the surgery center or hospital the next morning, do a dressing change and okay you for discharge.
