Carbon Dioxide Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing with the carbon dioxide laser is a useful treatment for fine wrinkling due to facial aging and sun damage, superficial scars due to acne or other injury, and some types of uneven pigmentation.

The laser treatment removes the top layer of skin thus allowing the skin to regenerate a newer, fresher layer. The laser treatment also tightens the middle collagen layer of the skin to some degree and some patients note an improvement in sagging and deeper facial lines after treatment.

Laser resurfacing can be used for specific areas such as the “crows feet” around the eyes or “smoker’s lines” around the mouth. The entire face can also be done. This surgery is usually done in my office operating room with intravenous sedation and local anesthetic.

Laser resurfacing is not for the weak of heart! Although the results are often stunning, the recovery time can be difficult. There is some burning discomfort for a day or two, usually well controlled with medication. But just as you are feeling better, you are looking scary. The laser treatment is like a well-controlled burn. There is crusting and peeling of the face for 7 to 10 days. Your well-meaning spouse may say something like, “Does your face hurt? It’s killing me!” During this time, patients stay close to home and avoid social activities. This can be tough. I recommend that patients schedule a full list of at-home chores, books to be read and videos to watch to make the time pass quicker. We see laser patients every few days to monitor healing and provide support. After healing, the face can be red for several months. The redness is usually easily concealed with makeup. It is of utmost importance to protect the treated area from any sun exposure until the redness has faded.

Laser resurfacing is best done of those with fair complexions. Those with darker skin are better treated with a physician supervised medical skin care program.
