Treatment of Breast Asymmetry
Breast asymmetry is condition I see frequently. It is usually quite
mild and addressed by making slight alterations in breast augmentation,
breast lift or breast reduction. When breast asymmetry is more severe
(more than one cup size difference between breasts), the treatment
is more challenging. Every case is different and it requires at least
a couple of visits to formulate a treatment plan.
In extreme cases, augmentation for one side and reduction for the
other may be recommended for achieve balance in breast size. Over
time, however, the reduced side will age differently than the augmented
side and the shape can become increasing asymmetrical. Also, if a
patient gains or loses weight, has children or goes through menopause,
the size and shape of both altered breast can change. Patients with
severe breast asymmetry will often require several procedures over
the years to help maintain their symmetry.
In some patients, I recommend doing the initial correction in two
stages. The first stage equalizes the breast size and shape, even
if it means making the larger breast “too small” like
the small breast and then, after a couple of months, augmenting both
sides with breast implants. This is a relatively new approach and
it may help decrease the number of revision procedures needed over
the years.
If you have breast asymmetry, take comfort in knowing that this is
a fairly common problem and surgery can almost always improve symmetery.
